Second-Life Astana

Some new developments on google earth.

The Astana city administration has almost completed creation of the capital’s 3D model on Google Earth. But social service Second Astana is something more, the first spots (central block of the left-bank Astana from Bayterek to the Pyramid) of the Kazakh land in the popular virtual world of Second Life, with which the developers seem to be in the process of establishing cooperation.

Blogging From The Road!

Google Earth helps readers figure out where this blogger's posts are written.

And the quality is not amazing, of course. But that’s not the point! Think of the potential! I am planning to blog from the road on our next trip across Serbia, and post pictures along the way too. I can even insert Google Earth/GPS links to show you where we are, hopefully. So why not subscribe to the RSS feed and keep up to date (link above)?

The Singapore Flyer In Google Earth

Some nice add-ons for Google Earth, especially if you live in Singapore.

I’ve previously posted a model of this forthcoming attraction, but this time it’s the real thing (last time I stole a model of the London Eye). Phil, the GM - Technical Services at Singapore Flyer Pte Ltd, has kindly created an accurate model of the Singapore Flyer. You can download his model for viewing in Google Earth here.

1949 Singapore Travellers Map

Click through for a nice overlay of a 1949 Singapore travelers map on Google earth.

Acromatic over at yesterday.sg drew my attention to a blog posting by kinkonkid about a 1949 map used to help Chinese travellers to Singapore. Kinkonkid provides a lot of interesting detail about the map in his posting. Acromatic thought it would make an interesting overlay in Google Earth, so that’s what I’ve done.

Flags Without Censorship

A quote from a post about a blogger who, after being kept from taking a picture of the Jordanian flag, found it on Google Earth.

“Is there a bigger scandal than this? The public security forces stopped me from taking a photograph of my country’s flag today! However, Google Earth can take pictures of whatever it wants,” he wrote sarcastically, while uploading an image of the flag from Google Earth.

Deck The Halls

Deck the Halls features Google Earth, or something similar.

The feud starts when Ashley and Emily suggest to Buddy that their new home cannot be viewed from MyEarth (a fictional Google Earth clone), and to Buddy, one way to do that is to light up his home so that it could be seen from outer space. That's the primary premise, and naturally, by doing that, you disturb the neighbours, the Finches. So begins the one-up-manship between the two guys, egos bursting and all, as they outwit and try to outlast each other, much to the disapproval of their wives and kids.
